That might actually work against it in some respects. Cars has a hell of a strong cast as well--Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt, Cheech Marin, George Carlin, Tony Shaloub, Michael Keaton, Edie McClurg, Richard Kind...but that doesn't make it a great movie.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-35888803331504536412015-04-14T20:17:09.337-05:002015-04-14T20:17:09.337-05:00Well, I'm no film-reviewy guy, but I think it&...Well, I'm no film-reviewy guy, but I think it's pretty good. And the cast is arguably Pixar's best: Dave Foley, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Madeline Kahn, Phyllis Diller, Roddy McDowell, Jonathan Harris, David Hyde Pierce, Joe Ranft, Dennis Leary, Brad Garret, Richard Kind and Kevin Spacey! Holy crap.
Ipecachttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15157560182505626755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-92024991035391333422015-04-12T21:43:37.685-05:002015-04-12T21:43:37.685-05:00It's been some time since I've seen it. It's not top tier Pixar, for sure, but I like many of the characters and have a real fondness for Dave Foley's Flick. And the two pill bugs are great. The story works for me and the villainous grasshoppers have some actual complexity. I especially like that Hopper has knowledge about their vulnerabilities the other grasshoppers lack.
Ipecachttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15157560182505626755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-81538362588662173562015-04-11T23:31:57.849-05:002015-04-11T23:31:57.849-05:00It's a coin flip on what I put where on the bo...It's a coin flip on what I put where on the bottom three, really. For me it would go:
1. The Incredibles
2. Monsters, Inc.
3. Toy Story 3
4. Toy Story
5. Up
6. Ratatouille
7. Toy Story 2
8. WALL-E
9. Finding Nemo
10. Monsters University
11. Cars
12. A Bug's Life

For what it's worth, though, I'd watch any of 1-9 on a moment's notice. I never really understood when Finding Nemo and WALL-E came out why people were gushing over those and forgetting about Monsters, Inc., which I felt was better than both of them. If your world doesn't work logically, the film breaks down completely, at least for me. If I believe in the world, I'm willing to believe in the story within the context of the film. Monsters, Inc. doesn't have any breaks.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-12920637147302628402015-04-06T10:41:32.604-05:002015-04-06T10:41:32.604-05:00The Incredibles is still my favorite animated film...The Incredibles is still my favorite animated film, but Monsters, Inc. might be the best one ever made. I can't think of way it could be made better.

And you're right--there's not a down moment in the whole film.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-32478897340576235912015-04-06T03:44:21.682-05:002015-04-06T03:44:21.682-05:00You are right about consistency. Monstropolis actually works despite being a silly idea to begin with.
When I first showed this one for my son he was too small and he got terribly scared. This is quintessential Pixar: it is clever, funny, perfect for the whole family, and most specifically, it is not afraid to get a little bit dark when it needs too. The moment when Boo sees Sully at his scariest is beautifully played.

This and the Toy Story trilogy are the best Pixar for me. The quality just doesn't slip throughout the whole movie.
