There simply isn't. Things more or less seem to happen around them without (often) happening to them. This is particularly true of Phileas Fogg, who just sort of stands there most of the time.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-40291276768583215432012-07-21T19:05:41.838-05:002012-07-21T19:05:41.838-05:00I agree that this film is really about the adventu...I agree that this film is really about the adventure, not about the characters. In regards to Cantinflas playing a Frenchman, Passepartout was French in the original Jules Verne novel, so they didn't change it for the movie. And Cantinflas was stunt casting to bring in the global market because he was the biggest actor in the world, outside the U.S., at the time. The whole Spain sequence was added to allow Cantinflas to do some of his schtick. It's not in the book.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-55425623268228708312012-07-20T15:52:40.390-05:002012-07-20T15:52:40.390-05:00Agreed. The other films of that year, in general, ...Agreed. The other films of that year, in general, were foreign and thus "eligible" but not really considered, or of a genre not taken seriously. The lone exception is The Searchers, which I think should have been nominated, and then should have won.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-12432537964728994762012-07-20T13:32:54.513-05:002012-07-20T13:32:54.513-05:00"icing without the cake."
Good quote.
..."icing without the cake."

Good quote.

Haven't seen this movie yet, and I feel like the only thing to compel me to see it is as part of a checklist of Best Picture winners, and not on its own merits in the least.

I just checked the list of other nominated films for Best Picture in '56: Giant, The King and I, The Ten Commandments, and Friendly Persuasion. Barf. What a weak year.siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.com
