She was the best part of the film but considering my low opinion of the rest that's faint praise.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-20124088170313489802018-04-15T11:34:29.371-05:002018-04-15T11:34:29.371-05:00You're nicer to this than I was, which is not ...You're nicer to this than I was, which is not uncommon. It's better liked than my opinion of it.

I agree on Deneuve and all three of the movies you mentioned. Just a couple of weeks ago, I also suggested Tristana as a possibility for her, and while that's probably behind the three you named, I still stand by it as a possibility. The Last Metro and The Hunger are others I'd toss in as serious suggestions for her.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-2964655142305566962018-04-15T09:41:34.232-05:002018-04-15T09:41:34.232-05:00I walked away from this thinking it was okay, pret...I walked away from this thinking it was okay, pretty and dramatic-certainly better than A Passage to India which I found an incredible slog, but much too long. I can see your point about it being overly emphatic throughout most of its running time-it was definitely pitched to High C- but I suppose that was meant to impress on us the hopelessness of everyone's situation.

I'm delighted that Catherine Deneuve has an Oscar nomination, in my opinion she should have at least one actual Academy Award, but why they decided to bestow it on her for this instead of Repulsion, Belle de Jour, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg or any number of others I don't understand. She's very good as is her custom but as you said she disappears for large chunks of the narrative.

I'd never watch it again but I wasn't sorry I saw it the once.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.com
