I'm convinced that Judy Holliday's ability to play a convincing ditz role came from an enormous intelligence.

I get none of that from Griffith, whom I rarely find convincing. Like I said, there never seems to be any weight in her performances.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-74830501820229102552018-01-20T19:34:58.565-06:002018-01-20T19:34:58.565-06:00You know Judy Holliday was who came to mind as a c...You know Judy Holliday was who came to mind as a comparison when I first saw Working Girl but then I saw the complete hash she made of Judy's role in the awful remake of Born Yesterday and was disabused of that notion.

Judy Holliday's innate intelligence shone through her roles but there was an awesome talent there and as well as enormous mix of strength and vulnerability and massive star quality. Griffith is missing all those things.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-21546635037202103582018-01-20T17:25:10.891-06:002018-01-20T17:25:10.891-06:00Yeah, that's pretty much where I am here. The ...Yeah, that's pretty much where I am here. The most upsetting thing about Pacific Heights is that a lot of it seems to be at least plausible in reality, and the closing sequence is pretty good in terms of a standard thriller.

Griffith comes across to me as sort of a bobblehead. I'm sure that's the roles (much like Judy Holliday played ditz roles but was herself quite bright), but there never seems to be any weight to anything she does.

And I like Matthew Modine well enough, but if Griffith is who you get when you can't get Meg Ryan, Modine is who you get when you can't get Cary Elwes.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-71627317300583677782018-01-20T12:11:13.461-06:002018-01-20T12:11:13.461-06:00I can't believe this made it onto any sort of ...I can't believe this made it onto any sort of scariest movie list. I saw it in the theatre and it was okay, nothing special and promptly forgot about it until seeing this. I share your puzzlement about the career of Melanie Griffith who outside of Working Girl which seemed crafted to her comes across as a squeaky windup doll who lands firmly on the annoying side. Thinking back on it I didn't remember Matthew Modine was even in this film! He can be fine in quietly recessive or gentle roles but as a man of action he's out of his depth.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.com
