This is a story that works entirely on the chemistry of the characters. Lemmon and Matthau obviously had that chemistry, which is why the film works. But, as you say, Randall and Klugman had it, too and also as you say, they had a great deal of time to explore it.

And I agree about Tony Randall--for years it was difficult for me to separate him from Felix. It's really the chemistry that makes the whole thing work, and Randall and Klugman had multiple seasons to really explore it. Tony Randall in particular seemed like his part was meant just for him. Where Lemmon had the tics and flutters down he was playing a part, from watching Randall on various TV interviews he seemed like he almost WAS the fussbudget Felix and he and Klugman, also extremely close friends offset, had that give and take that makes their characters seem organic. They had the advantage of the extended run of the show to flesh out their roles too.

The movie is fine but I can't remember the last time I gave it a look, I still watch an occasional episode of the TV show though. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-75611541920599545722015-12-29T17:14:17.907-06:002015-12-29T17:14:17.907-06:00I'd forgotten how much I liked the show back i...I'd forgotten how much I liked the show back in the 70s. It is a testament either to the fact that, as you said, there were few surprises in the movie or -- more likely -- my erratic middle-aged memory that I don't remember whether I've seen this film.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-13055569344948268392015-12-29T14:08:59.988-06:002015-12-29T14:08:59.988-06:00I loved the TV show when I was a kid watching it i...I loved the TV show when I was a kid watching it in syndication in the 1970s.
I saw the movie when I was about 20 - and I loved it even more because the writing is a lot better.
Tony Randall and Jack Klugman are great and the TV show definitely had its moments, but a lot of the time, it was pretty typical TV sitcom writing.Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17921029597363212734noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-64737569594448700132015-12-29T12:47:04.509-06:002015-12-29T12:47:04.509-06:00It's a great theme song, isn't it?

I had the same reaction - things felt a little off because I was so used to seeing Randall and Klugman. And also things didn't seem all that different, either.

You know, it might have been after Grumpy Old Men was popular and it talked about the re-pairing of the actors that I figured I might as well watch the original Odd Couple. Another reason to watch the movie is to see the pop culture touchstone. How many things now are described as "The Odd Couple with [fill in the blank]"?
