It's completely accurate and a fair point.

I like this movie quite a bit. A number of years ago, a movie website did a draft game/competition. Everyone involved took turns drafting actors/directors and pitched a movie. My pitch was a remake of this. I can't for the life of me remember who I got to star in it, but I remember I wanted John Hurt to do narration and Jeunet to be my director. It's fantastic!

I knew what it was about and it sounded a bit like The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Though I love Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison, I don't much like The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.

Pandora and the Flying Dutchman answers the question of what might have helped The Ghost and Mrs. Muir - Have the leading lady go skinny dipping - twice - and then add a bullfighter!

(On a pedantic note, I was a little annoyed that James Mason is identified as The Flying Dutchman. The legend is named after the ship and not the captain in every version of the tale I've ever seen.)Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17921029597363212734noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-38023049500418197352014-12-30T12:40:39.750-06:002014-12-30T12:40:39.750-06:00I tend to like James Mason a lot. He's the sort of actor I could watch read the left side of a menu and find myself entertained.

I thought the supernatural elements were interesting here, but a lot more could've been done with them. I don't tend to push for remakes, but I think this film could stand one. There's a lot here worth mining, and done well, this could be a hell of a great movie because the story is interesting.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-90393533337988042252014-12-30T05:07:02.210-06:002014-12-30T05:07:02.210-06:00Frankly, if you do not have a thing for Gardner th...Frankly, if you do not have a thing for Gardner then there is very little left in this movie. It is a tall task for James Mason to carry it alone. I found it ultimately too pretentious to the point of triggering gagging reflexes.
I am trying to read from your text what made you (sort of) like the movie, and if I understand you right it must be the supernatural element. That would also be my candidate (although I do like Gardner), but I found that it was played only for romantic effect and not far enough for dramatic effect. The captain is simply not dangerous enough and actully a sorry character. Although Mason gave it his best shot.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.com
