Maybe it's that severe pageboy haircut. I think she's an excellent actress, but there's something about her that just strikes me wrong.

I liked Murray Head in this. Being outacted by a couple of people who were at one point or another Oscar winners is no crime. Anyway, he's supposed to be a prat. That kiss pictured above whould have given a lot of people the vapors in 1971, and after Brokeback Mountain it barely raises an eyebrow.

I figured it was about the Bloody Sunday event as well.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-5858580666473439642016-01-08T11:02:08.481-06:002016-01-08T11:02:08.481-06:00I haven't seen this in years but I remember li...I haven't seen this in years but I remember liking it well enough. The thing is I saw if after years of hearing about it and its reputation for being progressive which I'm sure it was in its day, but by the time I saw it many of those elements were no longer quite so shocking so like you the edge was worn off.

I wasn't crazy about Murray Head in the film feeling that he was rather a prat and outacted by his co-stars. Peter Finch is almost always compelling and I've always loved Glenda Jackson but can see where she might take some getting use to.

She's a very specific actress with a flinty assertiveness and her characters usually display a minimum of warmth which made her ideally suited to a certain take charge type of role i.e. her brilliant turn in the 70's miniseries Elizabeth R where she played the queen from teen to old age. However she was capable of playing a softer character. I can't recommend the 1982 drama The Return of the Soldier highly enough, not only does she play against type in a beautifully delicate performance but she's matched every step of the way by Alan Bates, Julie Christie and Ann-Margret all doing award level work.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-45739714618703830622016-01-08T09:42:37.745-06:002016-01-08T09:42:37.745-06:00I had a similar reaction - that this film got its ...I had a similar reaction - that this film got its acclaim at least partially because of how shocking it was at the time, but watching it now it doesn't stand out that much.

On my end, I also had the wrong impression going in that this was going to be about the Bloody Sunday events. As it turns out, those events occurred while this movie was showing in theaters there. I also found out Daniel Day-Lewis had his first film appearance in this one as one of the three delinquents who were scratching up cars in one quick scene.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com
