After the first 20 minutes, I had genuine hopes for it. If it could have maintained what it was establishing in the opening, it would have ended up being a pretty compelling little film. But, as you say, it loses its way and turns into just another version of the same old story.

Of course, that's no different than a lot of films today. So close, though, but because of how completely it drops the ball, it's a hard film to recommend.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-83774364418138977482016-03-23T12:08:33.458-05:002016-03-23T12:08:33.458-05:00Yes, exactly. I know I've got some more Colbert to watch, but I'm done with the ones that are specifically her Oscar nominations.

Speaking of Cleopatra, I'll be watching one of them very soon...as in the next thing I'm posting.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-14736781544194155202016-03-23T10:10:52.348-05:002016-03-23T10:10:52.348-05:00I haven't seen this film, but your comments on...I haven't seen this film, but your comments on Colbert attracted my attention. I'm guessing you're referring to her Best Actress nominations having been completed because I don't remember you reviewing Best Picture nominees Cleopatra or Imitation of Life (both the original versions, not the also nominated remakes). Both of those star Colbert.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-19856028583708071092016-03-23T09:35:36.543-05:002016-03-23T09:35:36.543-05:00Well we all have our favorites and ya can't lo...Well we all have our favorites and ya can't love every classic performer, for instance I see Jennifer Jones and I grab for the remote! I don't dislike Colbert but I'd never list her in my top favorites either. She was a facile comedienne though and many of her films in that genre are breezy pleasures. In drama she tended to moon about too much for me but there are times, Three Came Home comes to mind, where she could be compelling too.

This film does have some unusual aspects for the time and I liked it for that but it did lose its way after that strong beginning. I was more excited that I was able to track it down than by the film itself, since I AM a big fan of both early Joel McCrea and any period Joan Bennett (though I've always found she is more vivid on screen once she switched to brunette hair-I don't think it necessarily had anything to do with her hair color but a confidence in her performing.)

As far as Colbert making rounds in different outfits I think it has to be looked at in historical perspective, the world was still struggling to get out of the depression and audiences wanted their stars to be glamorous whatever the situation. She gives a good performance in the film but as was the case with all the '35 nominees there were other actresses who were stronger in their films than she. Glad I saw it but once was enough.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.com
