For as crazy as her performance is, it's surprisingly nuanced and restrained, and I give her a lot of credit.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-91504330151108942732014-12-18T21:39:29.297-06:002014-12-18T21:39:29.297-06:00Hmmm. Off the top of my head Jodie Foster in The Silence of the Lambs comes to mind for great 90s female performances.

Sorry for saying this, but I'm not sure I'd even pick Bates as the best for that year. I haven't seen two of the nominated performances (Streep and Woodward), but I thought Angelica Huston did a fantastic job in The Grifters.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-9756404255395311602014-12-18T21:04:14.221-06:002014-12-18T21:04:14.221-06:00I do remember that skit, specifically because of J...I do remember that skit, specifically because of Jon Lovitz at the end.

You really should watch Misery some time. It's one of my favorite performances of the '90s (although not my favorite, and not even my favorite female performance of that decade).

I've thought the same thing about King. I get the feeling that this book was very personal to him in a lot of ways.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-48867009697283451262014-12-18T20:51:02.295-06:002014-12-18T20:51:02.295-06:00I've never seen the film but am still familiar...I've never seen the film but am still familiar with THAT SCENE.

Did you ever see the SNL parody? Unfortunately, this meant I spent a sizable chunk of the movie wondering when it was going to get to it.

You are correct that probably few people had heard of Kathy Bates before this film. I remember watching the Oscar telecast and recognizing the other four nominees (Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Angelica Huston, and Joanne Woodward), but not having a clue who Bates was. Then when she won I was sitting there thinking, "Who??!" And I remember she got on stage and with an "of course I won" attitude she proceeded to give a fully prepared and memorized acceptance speech, I think without even a single pause or stammer. I again thought to myself, "Who the hell is this?" Looking at her IMDB credits now the only thing I might have possibly seen her in at the time was a single episode of The Love Boat from 1978. I've seen her in 20 movies that she did after Misery.

Back to the story - one of the fun things about it was wondering if this was finally a horror story for the author, imagining himself in that scenario. I've never gotten the impression that any of King's stories with the supernatural in them particularly scared him in concept, but I've wondered if this one did.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com
