If memory serves, it was considered too brutal to air in the mid-1960s.

It's a hell of a movie, and for something that runs about 50 minutes, it's something that sticks with one for a long time. However, my dad thought I needed to watch all the nightly national news coverage and "60 Minutes" which were often just as scary with their penchant for using fear mongering to stir up ratings. I barely got to see "Red Dawn" thanks to my best friend's cousin renting it on VHS a few years after it was in theaters. And it wasn't until last year that I saw most of these other nuclear films after I finally watched "The Day After" and learned of their existences thanks to Wikipedia's list of 80;s nuclear dramas. I was one of the very few not traumatized at school the day after "The Day After" aired.John from Daejeonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08431973044799010218noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-15171937208827663202015-10-30T11:58:03.284-05:002015-10-30T11:58:03.284-05:00I loved Testament, and I agree with your assessmen...I loved Testament, and I agree with your assessment. I think if I had seen it in 1983 (I turned 16 that year) it would have scarred me for life. I watched it this past January: http://1001plus.blogspot.com/2015/01/fallout.html

Jane Alexander is fantastic in it, too.

SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-78126259211223692352015-10-30T10:40:40.061-05:002015-10-30T10:40:40.061-05:00"The Day After" scared the crap out of m..."The Day After" scared the crap out of me as a kid, but I think "Threads" would have given me a much greater hell of a scare if I hadn't seen it much later. However, the 1983 film, "Testament," would have given me a panic/fear induced heart attack and killed me outright had I seen it back then as a young boy extremely worried about nuclear holocaust and the effects of the aftermath.

This is what Roger Ebert had to say about "Testament" according to Wikipedia: Famed critic Roger Ebert, of the Chicago Sun-Times, gave the film a rare four stars out of four, and was highly enthusiastic about the film. Ebert said that the film was powerful and made him cry, even after the second time he watched it. Ebert wrote: "The film is about a suburban American family, and what happens to that family after a nuclear war. It is not a science-fiction movie, and it doesn't have any special effects, and there are no big scenes of buildings blowing over or people disintegrating. We never even see a mushroom cloud. We never even know who started the war. Instead, "Testament" is a tragedy about manners: It asks how we might act toward one another, how our values might stand up, in the face of an overwhelming catastrophe." Sounds quite unsettling, but that has purpose at times and so I'm not opposed to it. I'd rather feel something than nothing, for sure.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
