It's the only possible explanation for her nomination, because there's not enough of her, or much that's that great in the first two acts to justify her nomination. She's fine, but hardly great.

I tend to like Wyman, but this one didn't do much for me.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-37826992477486396732016-02-29T19:07:00.829-06:002016-02-29T19:07:00.829-06:00In fairness to the movie it is based on a novel by...In fairness to the movie it is based on a novel by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings that came out about a decade before the film so audiences probably knew walking in what to expect and to stay true to its source it couldn't go any other way.

It's gotta be that last portion that snagged Jane Wyman the nomination, she's good throughout but closed off until that point. She campaigned for the role, it had actually started filming in '41 with Spencer Tracy and Anne Revere and been abandoned, but didn't land the role until she had started work on another film, Night and Day, where she played Cole Porter's showgirl friend Gracie Harris. That's why she has the very glamorous, for a swamp living farm woman, blonde hair. She had fond memories of the film but said the hair color always stood out as a flaw to her. The success of this as well as her role in the previous year's Lost Weekend moved her up the ranks and helped her get Johnny Belinda. She never make my list of nominees either, not in a year so loaded to the gills with other performances that offer more complex work.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-18155024604636507212015-07-16T14:19:19.788-05:002015-07-16T14:19:19.788-05:00For what it's worth, I think it's worth wa...For what it's worth, I think it's worth watching as well. I think there are other movies that follow this basic pattern that are better than this one, but The Yearling is really effective at what it does. Gregory Peck cures a lot of ills, and Jane Wyman is great in the last few minutes (and decent elsewhere).

It's also noteworthy in the fact that Jody, while a little weepy in places and mildly annoying in others isn't so annoying that he calls attention to himself. That's kind of a rarity for kids in pictures from this era.

Last night, I picked up Kid #2 from a friends house and told her the basic plot of this. Her reply, "I bet the deer dies." Even for those completely unfamiliar with this film in the specific are aware of where the plot is going to go, kind of because it has to.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-22139186283811350092015-07-16T12:19:13.112-05:002015-07-16T12:19:13.112-05:00Actually, The Yearling's ending is pretty much...Actually, The Yearling's ending is pretty much pop culture from what I've seen. It's kind of like not knowing what happens in the shower scene in Psycho, who Luke's father is, or what happens to Old Yeller.

Because of that I avoided the film. I didn't need to see that happen. As luck would have it, though, it was a Best Picture nominee (possibly also on one of the AFI lists - I don't have them handy on this PC) so I watched it.

I liked it well enough to recommend it. And knowing what was coming did help me avoid too much emotional attachment.

Side note: at some point after seeing The Yearling I watched Rio Grande, which was made 4 years later. One of the young soldiers was a beanpole, well over six feet, skinny as a rail, and he looked like he wasn't old enough to shave. It took me a minute or so to realize it was the little kid from The Yearling. He must have grown a foot and a half.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com
