Because of that, and the cost of a single dollar, I now have this in my collection.

You're not alone in suggesting this has supernatural elements. I've seen this on lists of great horror movies, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if I discovered this was a huge influence on David Lynch. I've been wanting to see this for years!

For some reason, I thought it had a supernatural element and would be more like Onibaba or one of the segments from Kwaidan.

But no, it's more about the perils of roaming around unprotected in certain rural areas of Japan. It's sort of like Japan's version of Deliverance.

Not really.

I'm a sucker for Japanese films of this period (1955 to 1965) and Woman in the Dunes is another one that hooked me and reeled me in. Heck, it seems like they all do! Whether it's The Warped Ones or King Kong vs. Godzilla.

Way off-topic, Woman in the Dunes reminded me that there's another Japanese movie that's a favorite of mine that features a lot of digging: Female Convict Scorpion: Prisoner 701. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
