It's almost glaring, the connection between them. I feel kinda dumb now.

I get the opinion about the mother, but I didn't read it that way. I thought she was merely desperate and doing her best not to let her daughter know just how desperate she was. That coldness, that complete lack of empathy, felt like a defense mechanism to me. She couldn't risk losing it in front of her daughter because she desperately needed her daughter.

And yeah, she makes a pretty girlish boy.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-18371836133273800322013-10-10T22:30:03.782-05:002013-10-10T22:30:03.782-05:00I agree with all of this. When she was in trainin...I agree with all of this. When she was in training I was reminded of Europa Europa where the Jewish boy is trying to hide his secret while in school with all the Aryan boys.

One other thing that got to me some in this movie is that in addition to the Taliban and the ending, she also gets mistreated some by her mother. The girl is obviously terrified and doesn't want to do this, but her mother forces her to do it. I'm not saying there were much better options out there, but the mother's lack of empathy also was cold water in the face for me. It was almost as if the mother had been so independent and in charge at the hospital that she wasn't going to brook any nonsense from her daughter not being just as much of a standout in a man's society as she was herself. This despite her daughter's young age.

I was actually glad (in regards to the believability of the movie) that her appearance as a boy drew attention. I thought it was really obvious she was female even with the short haircut.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com
