I think it's very much the sort of thing that you either immediately latch onto and laugh because of just how wrong it is, or it hits you wrong.

@Alex: Very much so. The beauty of this is that everything that happens is just on the edge of reality instead of tipping over into farce.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-68238015450141632032012-09-16T19:00:14.911-05:002012-09-16T19:00:14.911-05:00I had a very similar reaction to siochembio - I li...I had a very similar reaction to siochembio - I liked it, but felt it didn't live up to the hype.

In addition, I was disturbed by the talent scene, but not for the obvious reason of "inappropriateness". I learned from posting on IMDB about it back when the movie was being seen that most people don't realize the implications of the scene, and that mentioning it to them completely changes their take on it, which in turn ruins their enjoyment of it. Because of that, I will just say the scene bothered me and leave it at that.

Good comparison on the breaking down of the van in comparison to the family. That hadn't occurred to me.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-17631350656311626872012-09-16T06:23:18.602-05:002012-09-16T06:23:18.602-05:00I love this film. I always found the film much more insightful than comedic as the dark "comedic" situations always felt more real than farcical.Alex Jowskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11737798466816750685noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-48766834561835679602012-09-15T17:28:59.874-05:002012-09-15T17:28:59.874-05:00I find it really funny, but I get where you're...I find it really funny, but I get where you're going with this. I think it did get overhyped, and I'm not sure it deserved either of its Oscar wins.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-29846181063853936562012-09-15T17:23:56.417-05:002012-09-15T17:23:56.417-05:00Totally agreed with you about Carell in this one, ...Totally agreed with you about Carell in this one, but overall, I failed to see why this one was such a big effin' deal. It was cute, sure, and it had its moments. I don't think this is a BAD film, by any stretch, but ultimately, I think it was a victim of its own hype for me. By the time I watched it (on rental, after awards season), I think it had been built up too much for me, and I was left feeling a little underwhelmed. Again, I *liked* it, but... that was about it. No great emotional connection.siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-51709899972166191762012-09-14T22:29:31.843-05:002012-09-14T22:29:31.843-05:00Join the club. I like to say that I like my chocolate as black as my stony little heart.

Seeing this in the theater was one of the best laughs I've had from any film in 10 years. You are right about Carell being a revelation--he has been in some pretty crappy comedies over the last few years, but he shines in this.Kimberly J.M.
