I can't say this is poorly made or bad or anything like that, but it does seem like a story that is very small and very personal. I don't want to say that I don't care, but I kind of don't care about Cuaraon's early life. For example, when the water drips, you hear it all around the room.

And yet, I was left pretty cold by the movie. I had been put off by the knowledge that Cuaron spent a huge amount of time collecting his childhood furniture (two thirds ended up in the film) and finding someone who looked exactly like his made/nanny for the lead actress. Why was this so important? It made the project seem self indulgent, especially as Aparicio was just OK. I did love the actress playing her employer; she was excellent. Ultimately I felt pushed aside by Cuaron as it was HIS vision about HIS life. Of course, it is the right of a director to do so, but I think of "Fanny and Alexander" as a much better example of a director dealing very personally about matters of family

I live Cuaron but feel this movie was honored more by pushing all the right cultural buttons of the day.

Gaeta1https://www.blogger.com/profile/03713581765217201673noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-26030828869962423352020-01-03T09:50:50.605-06:002020-01-03T09:50:50.605-06:00Your review nails why I haven't been able to g...Your review nails why I haven't been able to get myself excited to see this one. I love Cauron's work -- I think he's one of the best directors working today -- but this movie... maybe it was just the trailer that presents this as 2+ hours of staring out windows and sitting on beaches. nolahnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14686127419316337858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-44007667664221327382020-01-03T01:13:38.292-06:002020-01-03T01:13:38.292-06:00My dad was in Mexico in that area and understood t...My dad was in Mexico in that area and understood the times even though he was Honduran (Mexicans HATE Hondurans, Salvadorians, or anything not Mexican). He thought the film was alright though loved the look as it did take him back to those times. I think he would've preferred Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as that played more into the innocence of the times as he was in the U.S. during that time as well. thevoid99https://www.blogger.com/profile/03055459287396592446noreply@blogger.com
