I don't think she could play the straight woman for Groucho's...or anyone's jokes. I still think The Shop Around the Corner is my favourite Lubitsch film though :)Ruthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00175638828147935702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-73297950203167393582012-05-31T19:04:16.283-05:002012-05-31T19:04:16.283-05:00I liked her better here at the start of the film i...I liked her better here at the start of the film in a lot of ways. She was funnier in general, and it's a good bit of acting from her in the sense that she was funny, but the character wasn't trying to be funny.

That said, while it's not that hard for me to dislike a Garbo movie, it's still kind of hard for me to dislike Garbo in her heyday.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-84272489349565297162012-05-31T18:11:13.873-05:002012-05-31T18:11:13.873-05:00Good review. The remake was a little lighter in tone, and as you would expect in a film with Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse, it had more dancing. I admit that I was curious to see Garbo loosen up in the film. At first it felt a little unnatural, but I suppose that was the point of her character.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-70730718718943799652012-05-31T14:11:59.519-05:002012-05-31T14:11:59.519-05:00I can't possibly agree with you more on this. ...I can't possibly agree with you more on this. I found Camille to be more of an annoyance than anything. Everyone was self-absorbed and essentially not worth my time.

This one, though, I understand why Garbo was so popular in her day.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-59958924652561898052012-05-31T12:26:46.375-05:002012-05-31T12:26:46.375-05:00I watched this one recently as part of a Garbo box...I watched this one recently as part of a Garbo box set. I had been watching Queen Cristina and Camille as part of the 1001 project. Ninotchka was just some extra stuff in the box that I watched as some in-between filler. But this was actually much more entertaining than the others and I wondered why this was not on the list. Only to find out that indeed it is on the list, I was just ahead of myself and had not checked properly.
I find Garbo much better here than in Camille, which was hard to see. In Camille the flirtatious young woman character just did not fit Garbo, but that is exactly the character Ninotchka becomes and it fitted her perfectly. Maybe that is what the Lubitch touch is about...TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.com
