There are elements of Orpheus I really liked (like the mirrors), but I liked the whole film a lot less.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-8826146116422247182018-02-05T13:47:04.616-06:002018-02-05T13:47:04.616-06:00I have a sort of sentimental spot for Cocteau beca...I have a sort of sentimental spot for Cocteau because the first movie I ever saw with sub-titles was his Beauty and the Beast (which I've seen a couple of times since then). I was about ten and my mom took me and my brother to visit her friend, who had a son about our age. They also had cable, and we would sometimes be called away from playing to get some culture if PBS was showing anything good. (On other occasions, that was the same place where I first saw The Bride of Frankenstein and Yellow Submarine.) So we got called in to watch Beauty and the Beast. We loved it for being so weird!

I've seen Blood of a Poet and Testament of Orpheus since then, and I like them as well.

But I've never seen Orpheus! I found it for free on YouTube (with Spanish sub-titles) and watched it a couple of nights ago. It was OK but I was a little disappointed. I don't think the changes to the story did a thing to improve it. I was dozing off a bit near the end (though the conclusion is pretty exciting!).

Black Orpheus is on TCM later this month and I'm really looking forward to that one.
Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17921029597363212734noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-48529969955555095752016-11-17T18:47:02.719-06:002016-11-17T18:47:02.719-06:00Absolutely. There is a continuity in that, that the spirit of Orfeu and his music never dies.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-15178879769960938522014-09-18T07:47:23.531-05:002014-09-18T07:47:23.531-05:00Yeah, he was going for something here and didn'...Yeah, he was going for something here and didn't seem to mind if he left a big chunk of his audience behind.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-32538235965468892014-09-18T00:52:10.162-05:002014-09-18T00:52:10.162-05:00"Utter confusion for most of it" is quit..."Utter confusion for most of it" is quite precise. Even when you try to understand Cocteau's version of the story it is not particularly rewarding. Also the characters are so strange and stylized that it is just... off-putting.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.com
