A lot better. It was on TCM a few days ago and I just finished it.

I was a little confused at times, but I didn't really have any trouble following it overall.

It reminded me of Andrei Rublev and Alexander Nevsky. Andrei Rublev is my favorite Russian film, so it's really not surprising that I loved Marketa Lazarova.

In the 1990s, a bunch of Czech writers and people in the Czech film industry were polled on the best Czech film of all time. According to Ben Mankiewicz, Marketa Lazarova not only won, it was the unanimous choice.

As much as I like Closely Watched Trains and The Shop on Main Street, I'd pick Marketa Lazarova as my favorite Czech film.Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17921029597363212734noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-3562713430083648912015-11-28T19:14:37.479-06:002015-11-28T19:14:37.479-06:00I'd honestly have settled for "coherent.&...I'd honestly have settled for "coherent."SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-42679574143068715352015-11-27T09:58:28.443-06:002015-11-27T09:58:28.443-06:00Great to look at, almost as if actually filmed in ...Great to look at, almost as if actually filmed in the 13th century, in gloriously crisp black and white, but the dubbing is dreadful. As has been said, very confusing. No sound of wind, horses' hooves, doors shutting etc. Intimate studio voices, whether inside or in a biting wind outside. Could have been so much better!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09769221294112866532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-66450141586047210852013-01-25T12:28:16.408-06:002013-01-25T12:28:16.408-06:00It is a difficult film. I personally prefer the director's next film, Valley of the Bees; it's another medieval tale but a lot clearer and, perhaps more importantly, about an hour shorter.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-57030551306685639572013-01-22T19:56:52.811-06:002013-01-22T19:56:52.811-06:00Yeah, it's pretty Bergman-esque, except for th...Yeah, it's pretty Bergman-esque, except for the part where I generally like Bergman.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-21159095084105576952013-01-22T19:55:04.084-06:002013-01-22T19:55:04.084-06:00You did about as well as I did. All I can really tell you is that the actress paying the title character is great to look at and that the director had to have been a fan of Ingmar Bergman. I was about 10-15 minutes into this and I literally paused the film to confirm that this wasn't a Bergman film. It looked so much like one of his films to me, though, that it made me doubt for a minute.

Oh, and there was a lot of mud.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-19596473414520367202013-01-22T15:32:06.093-06:002013-01-22T15:32:06.093-06:00Yep.
