I think Mr. Skeffington might be the one.

But yeah--I can think of probably 10 Davis roles I'd much rather rewatch without going to look at the list of Davis roles I've seen, and I've only seen 15. That's not a good sign.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-77721693704335742722018-01-26T20:26:02.286-06:002018-01-26T20:26:02.286-06:00If ever a movie screamed Prestige Project to appea...If ever a movie screamed Prestige Project to appease its star its this one.

I love Bette Davis, I like Boyer and it was a hoot to see Barbara O'Neil, the portrayer of that paragon of temperance and equanimity Ellen O'Hara, having a high old time playing a total bitch but this movie aside from her gave me the grumps. It was just ssssooo slow to get anywhere and then I didn't care when it did.

I'm sure Bette was anxious to play the put upon heroine for a change and the book was apparently a big hit of its day but once was enough for me. If I need a Bette fix I'd go for almost any of her other films over this one.

I second the suggestions above of It's Love I'm After-a very fun little comic romp-and Fog Over Frisco-though with a certain reservation for that one. FOF is standard Warners programmer stuff and its one of Bette's last supporting turns but man alive does she inject energy into the film. Her character is a hedonistic fool hurtling head first towards trouble but when she's on screen the film is compelling, when she's not however its pretty weak sauce with the bland Margaret Lindsay & Donald Woods unable to come anywhere near her intensity. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-6923620927709205822018-01-22T16:51:00.735-06:002018-01-22T16:51:00.735-06:00It's not even so much the Ashley Wilkes thing....It's not even so much the Ashley Wilkes thing. He's in Stand-In (1937), a pretty funny movie (about making movies) with Joan Blondell and Humphrey Bogart. Davis and Leslie Howard play a couple of stage actors famous for "Romeo and Juliet." In the opening scene they are performing the death scene and whispering mean comments to each other between the Bard's lines.

Olivia de Haviland is socialite who's a groupie of Leslie Howard's character.

They're all pretty awesome!

The other obscure Davis films that I always recommend: Front Page Woman (directed by Michael Curtiz), Dark Horse (with Warren William) and Fog over Frisco.
