I felt the same way about the "Be unkind, Rewind" segment. He sort of deflates everything he's supposedly trying to say. A few hours later I'm starting to wonder what his REAL purpose was. I generally tend to avoid reading much about the 1001 films before i view them, but this was not the case for this film (which perhaps made it a little more tolerable - though not by much).

Again, I get what the director was trying to do, and i think he achieved it (for those who wanted to understand the film) - though i'm troubled to think that there may be some people who enjoyed it for other reasons.Klaushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05006608076041962884noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-17509016939542394122012-09-30T19:02:41.114-05:002012-09-30T19:02:41.114-05:00I don't disagree. It's not a film you're supposed to enjoy, but I think it's a spectacular film.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-78968176559006183932012-09-26T15:20:52.023-05:002012-09-26T15:20:52.023-05:00I'm in the same boat here. I don't really know what Miike was doing except going for shock.

I didn't really focus on the stupidity of the family in Funny Games, but I see that. I had had them in my Netflix Instant queue since March, but I had skipped over them in favor of other films. Last month I finally watched both of them. I respect Funny Games far more than Audition.

The latter felt almost like From Dusk Till Dawn where Tarantino and Rodriguez just took two partial scripts and mashed them together. The result, predictably, felt like two parts of a movie that didn't have anything to do with each other. Audition struck me the same way.

My one issue with Funny Games, other than the obvious, is that the family being victimized was so stupid. Sure, it's easy to say "I would have done X" when you're not in danger for your life, but the extended bit with the mother on the road was just so foolish that I stopped feeling sympathy for her.

As you mentioned, Funny Games makes us complicit in what is going on, especially when that character breaks the fourth wall.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-56884463718996446782012-09-25T21:43:25.116-05:002012-09-25T21:43:25.116-05:00Yeah. It's helpful, though, your comment about Haneke keeping most of the violence offscreen. That makes me a little less scared, but given how I was utterly wigged out by Cache, I have a feeling Funny Games will similarly creep me out.

I'm still not looking forward to Audition. Nope. Not at all. That'll be a forced watch with the lights on and surrounded by things to distract me. But giving said sadists full control over the film is a cheat -- and nobody likes a cheat. At that moment, Haneke erases any shred of tension from the story -- there is literally no reason to continue watching. And for Haneke to then to blame the sadists' actions on the audience is smug and obnoxious.Nolahnhttp://www.bargainbinreview.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-15281441601192454422012-09-25T09:47:34.040-05:002012-09-25T09:47:34.040-05:00I haven't seen Funny Games yet, but have seen ...I haven't seen Funny Games yet, but have seen Audition and would add Salo to my list of "not wanting to watch" films.Klaushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05006608076041962884noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-13452041365402485752012-09-25T00:50:42.716-05:002012-09-25T00:50:42.716-05:00Well, you know my stance on torture porn, which Au...Well, you know my stance on torture porn, which Audition sort of is. I hated it, but I did like the meta aspect.

The first time I saw audition, I only liked the last 30 minutes or so. The most recent viewing, which was with a friend, was much more entertaining. I realized the majority of the film is darkly comic and so absurd it becomes funny. The third act is disturbing, yeah (though not even close to the most disturbing thing I've ever seen). But it's also a total mind fuck in and of itself. Though again, it's much more entertaining watching it with a friend an seeing them react... Especially if you can get them to go in blind, which I managed.
