The comment I tend to make to myself about films like this--one I've never committed to paper, electronic or otherwise--goes like this: "I've seen some amazing footage from Botswana that only 12 other people have seen. Let's put that on the list."

@sio--Oh, that marketplace scene. I defy anyone to tell me that it's an important piece of cinematic history and be convincing.

I liked Deseret fairly well, too. First, the voiceover narration was interesting, as you say. Second, the scenery was far prettier to look at. Third, and most important as concerns this film, there weren't 10 minute scenes of Egyptian marketplaces with nothing happening.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-78429884467156119732013-07-20T18:09:24.215-05:002013-07-20T18:09:24.215-05:00At the risk of repeating my comments to Adolytsi, ...At the risk of repeating my comments to Adolytsi, I think there are dozens of films in this list that are there simply because a critic saw it even though it is hard to find. At some point when talking about the films in the book I described some of the critics' choices as coming from "East Snowshoe, Antartica".

I actually liked Deseret because I liked the facts about the state of Utah. I found them interesting and many of the images were beautiful. I have no liking for this film. I saw this early on after I started actively working on the list and this might have been the first one on the list that I hit the fast forward button for. It was after several minutes of the street scene that Siobhan mentioned.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-272274157557586772013-07-20T16:32:35.712-05:002013-07-20T16:32:35.712-05:00I cannot forgive a ten minute long static shot of ...I cannot forgive a ten minute long static shot of an Egyptian marketplace with no voiceover where NOTHING HAPPENS.

Seriously. What the hell is this movie.

The only credit I give this movie is that it was so dull it got my mind wandering and I started thinking about the similarities between Egypt and France and then wondering if that was the intent, that things suck everywhere.

I agree with you in that I do not understand why this is on the list. It felt like a gigantic waste of my time.siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-69844092442749621212013-07-20T15:58:11.794-05:002013-07-20T15:58:11.794-05:00It's an argument I've made from time to ti...It's an argument I've made from time to time, usually when confronted with a film like this one. This is one of those films that I can't understand why it made it on The List. There are some terrible films I understand--this one, that's the only explanation I can determine.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-29368673239965277852013-07-20T15:27:50.658-05:002013-07-20T15:27:50.658-05:00I was kinder to this than you were, though I agree...I was kinder to this than you were, though I agree that there's pretty much no point to this whatsoever than to display pretty locales, and even that's a stretch. Funny how your argument that this is on the list solely to stroke the editors' egos and make them feel knowledgeable is exactly the same argument Chip made in the comments section of my review.Adolytsihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12266038228108057617noreply@blogger.com
