I like the screenplay more, I like the story more, and I definitely like the two lead performances more. After Barbara Stanwyck, who I love unconditionally, Myrna Loy is my favorite classic film actress and I can't for the life of my understand why she was never nominated for a competitive Oscar.

It Happened One Night is a great film in almost every respect. While Loy and Powell did create prototype characters, I think this established the gold standard for screwball comedy, and I don't discredit that. I might be persuaded that this is more deserving of the top prize, but there's something special about a film that's more than 80 years old that still has racy and funny dialogue and can still make me laugh as hard as The Thin Man does.

I agree with you about Walter Connelly. It has the thinnest premise and manages to do the most with it. I'd lay the credit for that at Capra's feet, with a strong assist from his players, so his win is equally earned.

I really enjoy both Gable and Colbert's work, easy to do, and can't really quibble with their awards but if it were up to me those prizes would have gone to nominee William Powell and the inexplicably ignored Myrna Loy. Both couples create a perfect ying/yang combination but Powell and Loy fashioned characters that remain a prototype to this day.

It's a pity the supporting categories weren't created at this time, I think Walter Connelly's exasperated father would have taken the men's prize in a walk. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-33194458018114990592012-03-06T07:14:17.781-06:002012-03-06T07:14:17.781-06:00The Thin Man was a revelation for me. While they had to hide things, they certainly did things in early films that would still be considered on the racy side today.

That, and the fact that I still say it's one of the best scripts I've ever seen.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-83983899244174834822012-03-05T16:26:59.694-06:002012-03-05T16:26:59.694-06:00I really love It Happened One Night - it's not...I really love It Happened One Night - it's not as manic as later screwball comedies (which often seem more in the mold of Twentieth Century), but it's really solid as a film and always makes me happy. The scene on the bus with them all singing "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" is great. I'm working on a ranked list of Academy Award Best Picture winners, and I think this one came in the top five. HOWEVER. I would agree with you and still pick The Thin Man as the best film of 1934. Just shows you how much I love The Thin Man. :)Jandyhttp://www.rowthree.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-15851000280374672462012-02-29T19:46:04.146-06:002012-02-29T19:46:04.146-06:00This is the one that I find the most suspect of th...This is the one that I find the most suspect of those three, mostly because of the presence of The Thin Man.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-42601154107236327542012-02-28T19:38:29.914-06:002012-02-28T19:38:29.914-06:00I was also going to mention that it's actually...I was also going to mention that it's actually one of the three Big 5 films - screenplay included. It's the first film I ever reviewed on my blog because I was specifically posting on the Oscar Big 5 winners (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Silence of the Lambs being the only other two films to do it.)Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-86747807605527675192012-02-28T18:53:13.717-06:002012-02-28T18:53:13.717-06:00WONDERFUL!WONDERFUL!Pinecone Stewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00458622319448551558noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-48241240206638845682012-02-28T00:51:05.349-06:002012-02-28T00:51:05.349-06:00Yeah, I can see that. And really, it's difficult for me to dislike Clark Gable that much.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-89287171939081062832012-02-28T00:44:33.138-06:002012-02-28T00:44:33.138-06:00As much as I like Capra, I wasn't particularly...As much as I like Capra, I wasn't particularly fond of this movie. Often I'm able to look through old stereotypes about men and women, attributing it to being a part of history. But sometimes it clouds my experience and that was the case with this movie. The silly lady that couldn't take care of herself and the guy who turned up to be there to protect her against herself. Meh. Not my cup of tea really.Jessicahttp://www.thevelvetcafe.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-6578790102395748522012-02-28T00:06:31.344-06:002012-02-28T00:06:31.344-06:00Yeah, I suppose. Second, this is where The Thin Man really got robbed. That film still has one of the best scripts ever written.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-86350913051307605082012-02-27T23:24:15.286-06:002012-02-27T23:24:15.286-06:00How about adding Best Screenplay and make it a BIG...How about adding Best Screenplay and make it a BIG 5?Davidhttp://www.tasteofcinema.com/noreply@blogger.com
