I think this tends to happen more with dramas and romances than with other genres. Fanboys tend to react negatively to straight drama being seen as worthwhile. The same thing happened to Titanic, which still catches a lot of grief.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-24780582634713922412011-10-31T03:21:26.675-05:002011-10-31T03:21:26.675-05:00I loved this movie and I can't understand why ...I loved this movie and I can't understand why it seems to be so unappreciated among film buffs.

I love Social Network and True Grit as well, but I don't think they did the wrong thing to give the Oscar to this one.

By the way I listened to a wonderful one hour long interview with the scriptwriter done by the podcaster Jeff Goldsmith who has specialized in making interviews with the writers. It gave a lot of interesting background information about the making of the film. For instance the queen's mother had him promice not to make it until she was dead. So that delayed the movie 25 years....Jessicahttp://www.thevelvetcafe.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-60761403228204734082011-10-29T15:03:49.401-05:002011-10-29T15:03:49.401-05:00It's a strange film that humanizes a man who, ...It's a strange film that humanizes a man who, in many respects, is far removed from the typical human experience. George VI mentions this at one point--he says that when he goes through the city, he's aware of how little he knows of the day-to-day of his subjects, and vice versa.

The fact that we end up rooting for the guy is evidence of a great script, solid direction, and one hell of a performance.

A big part of his humanizing is the stutter. Another part is his obvious sense of humor at his own expense. A bigger part (for me) was him shouting profanity at the top of his lungs.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-23445872023833790882011-10-29T05:32:42.354-05:002011-10-29T05:32:42.354-05:00Agreed, it's an awesome film, although I'm...Agreed, it's an awesome film, although I'm one of many who also thinks it shouldn't have won Best Picture.
