Touch of Evil and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof are also great movies.Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17921029597363212734noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-25932413619173476742018-04-10T12:39:32.082-05:002018-04-10T12:39:32.082-05:00I'm no fan of Vertigo but it sure doesn't ...I'm no fan of Vertigo but it sure doesn't make me ANGRY the way Gigi does. Such a cool film, although I'd most likely want to see it nominated for its score. I was glad to see your mention of Elevator to the Gallows which I think has one of the most clever screenplays ever.marie_dresslerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06334550550983418668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-83832968805326651022018-04-10T09:26:41.428-05:002018-04-10T09:26:41.428-05:00We'll disagree on Vertigo making sense. I think a part of the film's genius is that it all holds together despite going to places that make sense only in a sort of fugue mental state.

But yeah, we're in lockstep on Gigi. To hell with that movie.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-10735843778060889042018-04-10T00:34:50.230-05:002018-04-10T00:34:50.230-05:00it would be Touch of Evil for me. OF course there ...it would be Touch of Evil for me. OF course there are many elelments here that combine to make it great, but the screenplay is definitely one of them. The trouble with Vertigo is exactly in its screenplay that does not always make sense, but it is still lightyears ahead of Gigi. I share your loath of that pile of dung.
TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-16111474232367944002018-04-09T14:26:05.561-05:002018-04-09T14:26:05.561-05:00As is often the case, my original lineup was very ...As is often the case, my original lineup was very different. In this case, places 1 and 5 were decided immediately and the middle three moved around a lot.

I don't take any issue with Touch of Evil winning. I do think that Vertigo (I film you're not a huge fan of, if I recall) has a margially better screenplay, but that's clearly debatable. Having both of these on the outside looking in feels criminal, doesn't it?SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-11090133412677191072018-04-09T11:16:39.646-05:002018-04-09T11:16:39.646-05:00I'd switch I Want to Live! and The Horse's...I'd switch I Want to Live! and The Horse's Mouth but otherwise I'd agree with your lineup. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof really is one of the best Williams adaptations.

I like the suggestion of Some Came Running which becomes more complex with repeat viewings. I happen to love Auntie Mame, I know you don't, but as delightful as I find the film it is very much a filmed stage play so I don't think it would rate a nomination.

The only other suggestion I'd make is No Time for Sergeants which is a terrific take on the light-hearted book. But again I'd come down to the two choices you did, Vertigo and Touch of Evil with my pick going to the latter.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.com
