I'm pretty much on the same page as you in admiring it but still feeling pretty cold. It's my least favorite from PT Anderson despite being quite an achievement. I'm not sure I'll watch it again.Danhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12351431577484530230noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-32167235585079125072014-04-17T22:25:22.134-05:002014-04-17T22:25:22.134-05:00Fair enough. It was as if there was not much of any substance to hang onto afterwards, in regards to the story.

I had to actually go back and see if I posted a review of it in order to clue myself in on whether I recommended it or not when I was doing my Oscar nominations posts that year. I so appreciate The Master, but I don't foresee myself watching it nearly as much as PTA's other films. I also respect what you wrote in the Why not to watch section. People complain that Leonardo DiCaprio has been nominated five times and never won. They forget that Adams also has five nominations and no wins.

The whole "processing" procedure here is reminiscent of Scientology. Yes, there are plenty of similarities to a lot of cults, but that's what makes the connection here in my mind.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-48703592680484349112014-04-16T02:41:21.092-05:002014-04-16T02:41:21.092-05:00"in part based", I agree with. I read it..."in part based", I agree with. I read it could be based on any number of cults, not about a certain organization, but to show the man in power and his influence over those near him.
Agree the characters are sort of unlikeable, though they are so fascinating to observe, that I can't look away.
I'm surprised it didn't get a nom for cinematography. J Phoenix should have won an oscar by now, he is one of the best actors of his generation, along with his costar PS Hoffman.Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09395044055566348346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-57526211247229651032014-04-16T02:06:06.044-05:002014-04-16T02:06:06.044-05:00Been wanting to see this film for a while.
