World War II is much more my era. Vietnam is my brother's conflict, not mine.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-86759655273336787512018-03-22T01:47:07.256-05:002018-03-22T01:47:07.256-05:00I was kind of busy for a few days and didn't h...I was kind of busy for a few days and didn't have time to watch a whole movie, so I watched In the Year of the Pig in 10- to 30-minute segments over three days. I wouldn't suggest this method for people who don't know a lot about the Vietnam conflict. I have a master's degree in history and went through a phase where I read A LOT about Vietnam, so doing it like this worked for me OK, though I would like to watch it in one sitting some day.

As for whether or not this film has a neutral perspective ... the people who propagated the war get plenty of air time here - Nixon, Johnson, Humphrey, the leaders of South Vietnam. It's hardly the filmmakers fault that the justifications sound LAME LAME LAME!

My favorite part is Madame Nhu talking about how much Buddhist monks love setting themselves on fire. The filmmakers didn't make that up.

If you only have time for one book on the Vietnam War, I would suggest A People's History of the Vietnam War by Jonathan Neale. If you have time for two more, I recommend Vietnam: A History by Stanley Karnow, and The Best and the Brightest by David Halberstam.
Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17921029597363212734noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-33918138449009808942013-02-08T07:39:24.565-06:002013-02-08T07:39:24.565-06:00Very, very true. Additionally, this hardly comes from a neutral perspective.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-49547571798378251512013-02-08T02:50:54.682-06:002013-02-08T02:50:54.682-06:00I showed this a few times in my American History S...I showed this a few times in my American History Since 1945 class (obviously for the Vietnam Era) and I thought my students' heads were going to explode. For someone unfamiliar with all of the elements of the conflict (prior history, etc.) it is very difficult to follow. Kimberly J.M.
