On the one hand, the music is so incongruous in the science fiction setting that it's almost funny. On the other hand, the music constantly reminds you that Quill is a human being, which grounds the film in exactly the way it needs to be grounded. Amazing choice that on paper sounds like it shouldn't work but really, really does.Ipecachttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15157560182505626755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-79985789670171131822014-08-06T21:06:38.918-05:002014-08-06T21:06:38.918-05:00Yeah, George Lucas's nightmares is right. I just know that I'm never going to watch this with my wife or kids. Everything is still easy to follow despite the litany of names from George Lucas's nightmares. With a property like this one, unknown characters (in general) and a built-in audience only because it's a superhero movie of a sort or a Marvel property, it could have been really terrible. I stand by the earlier comment that James Gun nwas exactly the right guy to handle this despite his pedigree. He has the perfect mindset for it.

I like the breakdown of these characters vs. Joss Whedon's. The only think I might add is that Rocket has quite a bit of Wash in him, too. He's got the smart ass humor and the piloting skills at least.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-19247510561863478032014-08-04T19:54:26.316-05:002014-08-04T19:54:26.316-05:00I thought this was going to be the movie where Mar...I thought this was going to be the movie where Marvel finally overreached and bombed. A film with third rate characters (Ironman, Thor, etc. being second rate to Spider-Man and Wolverine) that even people like me who read comics once upon a time barely knew, and that included, among other things, a talking racoon? No way that can succeed. Even the first couple trailers didn't change my mind. But a few days before the film opened I was hearing nothing but gushing critics, then word of mouth started and I said to myself that I liked what Gunn did with Slither and Super and Whedon has a hand over all the Phase 2 Marvel properties, so why not give it a shot. Man was I happy I did.

I completely agree this has a Serenity vibe. There's more than a little bit of the Firefly characters in Guardians of the Galaxy. (Quill is Mal, Gamora is Zoey, Drax is Jayne, Groot is Kaylie, and Rocket, well, he's Jayne, too.) I was half expecting Nathan Fillion's cameo to be his Mal character. And it's interesting because I remember when Serenity came out one critic described it as "Star Wars with Han Solo as the main character, and he shoots first" and now I'm hearing some people comparing Quill to Han Solo and even calling this film their children's Star Wars.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-43520027335331221522014-08-04T15:10:15.402-05:002014-08-04T15:10:15.402-05:00I have a light week of grading this week thanks in...I have a light week of grading this week thanks in part to the time I spent over the weekend. I paid pretty close attention, so I was able to follow it, but in the house I live in, I can imagine my wife and both of my daughters asking a shitload of questions.

The CGI was excellent overall. There were only a couple of moments where movements felt a little unnatural, so it was a minor problem at most.

And, I guess that when Avengers 3 comes out the world will cease to exist because Marvel will win the "we own everything" battle.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-52222695246405000072014-08-04T15:06:40.779-05:002014-08-04T15:06:40.779-05:00Oh, and weirdly enough, I also waited until today ...Oh, and weirdly enough, I also waited until today to see it at a $5 matinee. I didn't feel it was overload at all. The opening on Earth is a great emotional setup. The dancing into the opening credits is fantastic. The action soon after is great. And I shared no problems with everything leading up to the prison. Also, I specifically thought the CGI was outstanding in this film and never once focused on the fact Rocket or Groot weren't actually there.

Finally, Guardians and Avengers will come together in Avengers 3, along with Thanos.Nickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08092564511948736386noreply@blogger.com
