Better, there is never a moment when you can't tell what is going on during the brilliantly choreographed fight sequences.

There are times when I want very little but very specific things from my movies. When I went to see Mad Max: Fury Road, I wanted two hours of explosions and car chases and I got exactly that. With The Raid, I wanted ass kicking, and that's what it is.

There's perhaps too much shaky-cam in the first 25 minutes or so, but once we get to the martial arts stuff, it's a masterclass in how to film a fight sequence.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-44400362990246776942017-11-07T12:01:25.349-06:002017-11-07T12:01:25.349-06:00I think I understand what you're saying about ...I think I understand what you're saying about Tree of life, though I disagree. It's definitely majestic and beautiful, but also excessively long and rambling. »Too much of nothing«, as a certain Nobel Prize Laureate once put it.

Plenty of good movies this year, as has been pointed out. I probably would have chosen »A separation« (really heartfelt), but I also very much like »The artist« (a delight, though maybe too bagatellish) and »The skin I live in« (both cerebral and emotional).

Haven't seen The Raid, so no opinion there.nicolas krizanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05431891515197497487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-75242734202848304802017-11-06T14:36:20.755-06:002017-11-06T14:36:20.755-06:00In reality, Malick, McQueen, and Almodovar would b...In reality, Malick, McQueen, and Almodovar would be much more likely picks, and any of them would be great choices.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-64383173139432248112017-11-06T08:22:28.522-06:002017-11-06T08:22:28.522-06:00Malick would've gotten my vote as well. And I also think The Skin I Live In is Pedro Almodovar’s best work. Nice to find someone else who holds that movie in such high regard.Alex Withrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15887018476048271594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-62931166095357815622017-11-05T22:50:09.619-06:002017-11-05T22:50:09.619-06:00It is, and in a normal year, all four of them woul...It is, and in a normal year, all four of them would be (honestly) better choices in a lot of ways.

I have a real problem with how modern action movies are filmed. Evans does it right, and that in and of itself is so shocking that it feels like a revelation. I would have been torn between Steven McQueen for Shame, Malick for Tree of Life and Farhadi for A Separation. All masterpieces. Oh, and Almodovar too. Damn, its too hard to choose!Julia Machttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09041411551162128922noreply@blogger.com
