She was the best part of Mary, Queen of Scots for me. I stand by the fact that if Jackson had been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 1971, she probably would have (and should have) won.

It's a good point on Bates, too. Let's put Joseph Cotten in that group as well, although Bates did get a single nomination during his career.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-7035429952110189492018-03-02T09:10:26.285-06:002018-03-02T09:10:26.285-06:00I can't say I liked this very much either. Like all English village set films it's beautiful to look at but outside of that startling wrestling scene it was kind of a trial.

Unlike you I love Glenda Jackson but I can't say I understand why she won for this. First of all she's really a supporting character to Bates and Reed, the role also doesn't really give her anything to challenge her like Marat/Sade or Sunday, Bloody Sunday or Queen Elizabeth did.

I agree about Alan Bates who was often the best thing in his films and is best in show here. He wasn't acknowledged nearly enough suffering that stigma that many consistently exceptional performers, Edward G. Robinson, Myrna Loy, Ida Lupino, Mia Farrow etc., do-when excellence is the norm it becomes expected and therefore goes unrewarded.

Speaking of Jackson and Bates if you haven't seen it I highly recommend The Return of the Soldier which also has Julie Christie and an almost unrecognizable Ann-Margret as well as Ian Holm in the cast. Glenda plays a very different role than was her usual type and does so beautifully. The whole film is wonderfully acted and while it also has a stately pace I enjoyed it much more than Women in Love.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.com
