He's channelling the persona rather than the person, and I think he does that very well.

But you're right--it's a standard redemption movie, a father-son reunion story, etc. In that respect, it's not nearly as good or as interesting as (say) Field of Dreams, which tells a similar story.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-75308689594878996282020-10-20T13:07:28.060-05:002020-10-20T13:07:28.060-05:00I think I liked this a little better than you but ...I think I liked this a little better than you but I agree that Tom Hanks is the best part of he film by far. He neither really looks like nor sounds like Fred Rogers but he nails the essence of the man and that's what matters.

As for the rest it was your standard redemption scenario, well-acted but not nearly as compelling. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-27480891156857047792020-10-20T09:01:22.928-05:002020-10-20T09:01:22.928-05:00If you haven't seen Won't You Be My Neighb...If you haven't seen Won't You Be My Neighbor?, that's the movie you're looking for, although that's a documentary. I get what you're looking for, though--a film that shows what turned Fred Rogers into Mr. Rogers. That's a story worth seeing. How does someone develop and foster that kind of reflexive empathy?

Fred Rogers, along with Steve Irwin and Bob Ross, have become sort of mythological figures. Jim Henson is on his way there, and possibly Carl Sagan. I imagine the same might eventually happen with LeVar Burton. I'd say Bill Nye as well, but I'm not sure he's got the off-camera reputation to back it up--Neil DeGrasse Tyson is probably a more likely choice. I liked it but...I think we're on the same page. I liked it but it was never compelling. I also applaud the way this was framed like an episode. Unfortunately, once that became apparent, from the opening frame, all hopes of any tension was drained. It just moseyed along with Mr. Rogers more or less sprinkling fairy dust on everything. I get it because I grew up with him also and went through all the phases you describe in my own life and arrived precisely where you are. The film is sweet as all get out, and Hanks is great, so I can't totally dislike it. Still, I would've much preferred a biopic with this same energy devoted to a tough time in Mr. Rogers's own life.Dellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05634519605152190304noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-18308577382841924332020-10-20T01:58:28.830-05:002020-10-20T01:58:28.830-05:00I do want to see this as I know it's on Starz ...I do want to see this as I know it's on Starz as I want to see what Hanks does as I too from that Gen-X period that was rolling my eyes for Rogers but he is someone we need more of these days.
