It really blew me away. I want to watch it again immediately and I'm thinking it might be my favorite movie from 2016.

I don't know if Natalie Portman got the accent close to perfect, but it was close enough for me! The secret to a good accent performance is consistency! People from the region may be a bit pedantic about it - "Jackie didn't talk like that! That's how they talk in PEABODY!" - but if you keep it consistent, only the experts will be bothered by it.

I don't work today, but I have a bunch of little tasks (and I want to see Atomic Blonde this afternoon) and I'm hoping to get done with my tasks early enough to watch Jackie again before I go to bed. (My On Demand rental is for 48 hours and I can watch it again for free until tomorrow afternoon.)Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17921029597363212734noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-77766782760217225442017-07-24T15:11:38.876-05:002017-07-24T15:11:38.876-05:00I think it's an interesting film and a great p...I think it's an interesting film and a great performance, but I also think it's worth waiting for. I'd be a little surprised if it didn't show up on a streaming service for free pretty soon. I had planned to see it, but somehow it slipped through the cracks. Maybe it wasn't in theaters very long or maybe there was just always something I wanted to see more.

It's available On Demand for about $6 but I was going to wait a few weeks and see if it becomes available at the library. But I really want to see it and it's only 100 minutes, so I may just break down and pay the $6. There's a lot more going on internally that has to show through the cracks or that is only hinted.

I think it shows that what I've seen in Natalie Portman in films like Black Swan and V for Vendetta is really there in her. She's managed to live down some really bad Star Wars prequel screenplays.

It will be some time before I tackle the 2016 Best Actress race although I'm missing only one performance at this point.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-63885008462442313472017-07-23T09:27:30.146-05:002017-07-23T09:27:30.146-05:00There are moments of the film that I think are bri...There are moments of the film that I think are brilliant in terms of the dialogue because it really does hammer home that idea that Kennedy's death was a national tragedy, yes, but it was also a man dying and a family losing a father and husband. Her desire to make his funeral something that would be remembered is her chance to, as she says at one point, make sure he's eventually not just another oil painting.

Most of the people in the cast don't really look like who they are, but they aim for something much deeper. Peter Sarsgaard is a good example of that. He doesn't much look like Bobby Kennedy, but he's still very much Bobby Kennedy.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-52773227769749929892017-07-23T09:09:08.851-05:002017-07-23T09:09:08.851-05:00I liked the film and the performance while being f...I liked the film and the performance while being fully conscious that it was a performance but as you say that is what Jackie Kennedy had to present during those dark days after the assassination.

Having watched the White House tour that the real Jackie gave once she had restored it Portman's vocal quality is very much on pitch. The actual woman had that breathy, measured private school intonation to her speech. At first it was a bit distracting but after the first few minutes I didn't notice it as much.

The film is VERY much a star vehicle but great care was taken with the surrounding cast to support that main performance. It helps to make the film feel much more rounded. I don't know that she's get my vote for the Oscar this year but I thought Natalie's work was much more varied and interesting than Emma Stone's.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-77891180425432421802017-07-23T07:56:50.862-05:002017-07-23T07:56:50.862-05:00I would have given Portman the Oscar for Best Actr...I would have given Portman the Oscar for Best Actress for this. I was blown away by her performance, which as you say, is a performance of a performance. She doesn't really look like Jackie, but I can't imagine anyone else trying to play her and being as good as Portman is.

Oddly I found this a very emotional film, and I really liked that it approached the assassination from her perspective: usually it is all from the conspiracy side of things, and we often forget that a woman lost her husband that day, and craddled his head in her lap as he died.
