And Garland would have been potentially tremendous in the role.

This is so much Woodward's picture that it's hard to see anyone else in the role. Her work is really impeccable here, and it's obvious from moment to moment which of the personalities is driving the bus. That's got to be hard to do, and she makes it look so effortless.

And yeah, I've been a fan of Lee J. Cobb for years. I love it so much when an actor who has a particular known "range" manages to do something so outside of that and do it so well. Sure, he's absolutely overwhelmed by Woodward, but who wouldn't be?SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-12123098355685943362018-03-11T17:34:37.764-05:002018-03-11T17:34:37.764-05:00I’m sure the film had more impact upon its initial...I’m sure the film had more impact upon its initial release pre-Sybil when the idea of multiple personalities was an unknown even unthinkable notion to the public at large. I’ve read the book on which this film is based-called simply “I’m Eve”-and the actual woman, Chris Costner Sizemore had far more than three separate personalities but it was felt that even a trio of separate selves was stretching it with moviegoers. You’re right that it took her many more years, decades actually, to be cured than shown (it still hadn’t happened fully when the film was made) though when the integration did take place the pieces fell into place rather rapidly. But that was after much painstaking and exhausting therapy and various other treatments.

I’m glad you mentioned Lee J. Cobb, I’m a big fan. His somewhat pugnacious looks and ability to go big often got him cast in confrontational roles but he was capable of bringing great depth to his portrayals without appearing soft. His gruffness, as opposed to a more typical choice like Lew Ayres or Fredric March, makes his shrink stand out a bit more against the tornado of a performance that Woodward delivers. She knocks everybody else, including David Wayne, out of the picture.

Speaking of Joanne Woodward, she really gets into the psychological space of each component of Eve and above all else is the reason to seek this out. The film made her career and she won the Oscar for it but as ideally cast and perfect as she is in the role she was far from the first choice.

Initially the director wanted Judy Garland but the studio shot him down fearful that her personal problems would prove insurmountable. A shame because outside of Woodward I think with her deep well of emotional variety she would have been both fascinating and fantastic in the part. It was next offered to the queen of the lot-Susan Hayward who passed, a decision she later regretted, then to June Allyson who wanted to do it but her husband Dick Powell convinced her, probably correctly, she wasn’t suited to it. Then they turned to Ann Blyth who was expecting a child so declined. Followed by Eva Marie Saint-another good fit-but she turned it down because she was committed to A Hatful of Rain. Finally Fox arranged to borrow Carroll Baker from Warners but she discovered she was pregnant as well and had to withdraw at which point they turned to Woodward whom they had under contract. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-54281630407534098472018-03-11T09:39:47.921-05:002018-03-11T09:39:47.921-05:00I did have that in mind when I was writing this.
