It didn't upset me (although I'm glad I watched with headphones so my kids didn't hear it), but it startled me at first.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-7806358716798626642012-09-16T21:48:39.908-05:002012-09-16T21:48:39.908-05:00To clarify - by "thrown" I did mean it s...To clarify - by "thrown" I did mean it sounded like you were surprised or caught off guard and didn't know how to react, not that you were complaining about the scenes. Sorry for the confusion.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-58372193988284186012012-09-16T20:25:02.192-05:002012-09-16T20:25:02.192-05:00It didn't throw me so much as just surprise me...It didn't throw me so much as just surprise me, at least at first. I'm not one for frank sexual conversation in my real life, so it always makes me miss a step when it turns up in film, simply because it's not something I tend to discuss with anyone. I'm far more comfortable with depictions of actual sex than I am with descriptions of sex, I guess. Seems odd, but there it is.

However, if you re-read the last paragraph, it's more about warning other people than complaining. The sexual nature of this film is pretty frank, and that's going to bother some people, so I figure it's only fair to warn them. I do the same with graphic violence and with excessive language. It takes a lot to offend me, but I'm not 100% aware of the sensibilities of everyone who might read this blog.

I have seen This Film is not Yet Rated, and I think it's an important film because of the case it makes. I also have to say, from the sheer amount of times you mentioned it in this review, it comes across that it threw you some. I completely agree with your points on simulated sex vs. simulated violence. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend the movie This Film Is Not Yet Rated. It exposes the hypocrisy at the MPAA in regards to this and other things. Watch the deleted scenes on the DVD where the director finds out that the MPAA actually pirated his movie.

One key thing that also factors into the interactions of the three main characters in Y Tu Mama Tambien is that Verdu's character is an "older woman" for these two. It added a great shading to a story that would have been much different if the woman that went with them was their age.

I liked this film, and I include it with Amores Perros and The Crime of Padre Amaro as one of three very good Bernal movies he made in consecutive years.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-26893903105387210132012-09-12T08:27:09.797-05:002012-09-12T08:27:09.797-05:00Yep. She's the main reason to watch it. I thin...Yep. She's the main reason to watch it. I think it's because of the three characters, she's the one who seems to actually have something like an interior life.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-39397446550646952002012-09-12T03:14:50.490-05:002012-09-12T03:14:50.490-05:00Maribel Verdu is great in this.
