One wonders, of course, how accurate his portrayal really is to the history, but for the narrative, he handles this well. His version of Louis is pitable, but not pathetic. It's easy to feel bad for him rather than being finding him gross.

I still say it's a bit long, but it's a worthy watch.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-15314296991248632862015-12-23T15:54:16.940-06:002015-12-23T15:54:16.940-06:00My biggest disappointment with this is that it sho...My biggest disappointment with this is that it should have been in color. It just screams out for it and how amazing those costumes and sets would have appeared. As it is it's a dazzling production but had Thalberg still been alive, he died in the early planning stages, I would think color would have been a given.

Morley handles his difficult role very well walking that tightrope between making the King a buffoon and just a simple kind man totally unsuited to his position and the great Gladys George is underused but super as Mme. Du Barry.

It's Norma's vehicle though and the role of Marie Antoinette fits Shearer like a glove, her royal grandiosity suits Norma's more theatrical gestures making them more natural to the situations although by this point she had toned many of them down and some of her strongest moments are her quiet reflective ones, her final shot is very powerful.
joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-18495022375466728462015-07-03T09:03:32.347-05:002015-07-03T09:03:32.347-05:00The length is something I noticed in places. It's not egregiously long, but it's something that I think could use a little trimming.

I noticed that The Barretts of Wimpole Street was on TCM in the morning. That really didn't figure into watching Marie Antoinette yesterday--I'd had it sitting on my desk for a couple of weeks and it was due in a couple of days. It was a "now or never" situation.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-57981485166109963182015-07-03T00:32:07.070-05:002015-07-03T00:32:07.070-05:00It's been a while since I saw Marie Antoinette...It's been a while since I saw Marie Antoinette so I don't remember anything specific about it but I do remember that I liked it and I don't remember thinking it was too long. (That's the kind of thing I usually remember.

Such a strange coincidence! I just finished watching The Barretts of Wimpole Street and I was thinking about what a great track record Norma Shearer has with me. I like everything I've ever seen her in and a number of them are not just good or very good, they are great!

He Who Gets Slapped, The Women, Private Lives, Romeo and Juliet, and The Barretts of Wimpole Street are all great, and I really like some of her pre-Code movies.

I'm not really sure where Marie Antoinette falls on the Norma Shearer scale. Maybe it's not great, but I remember that much of it was very entertaining.Tonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17921029597363212734noreply@blogger.com
