It's probably the Caron performance that I like the most, or at least the lead performance of hers that I like the most. So at least there's that.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-54558769113756836302017-08-30T00:16:05.852-05:002017-08-30T00:16:05.852-05:00I was going to pass on Leslie Caron Day during TCM...I was going to pass on Leslie Caron Day during TCM's Summer Under the Stars, but I saw a trailer for The L-Shaped Room and decided to give it a try.

And I'm glad I did! Great movie!

A couple of favorite weird little moments - Mavis the former music hall performer singing "Old Blighty" at the Christmas Party.

And Bernard Lee - who played M (of James Bond fame) for the first time about the same time this movie was made - as an exuberant, perhaps slightly drunk tenant at the same party. I think he's playing the piano for Mavis. The topic comes up a few times, but the moment it does, Jane shoots it down.

Love with the Proper Stranger is on the queue eventually. It's not one I considered important until you've mentioned it.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-13430177265903548782016-10-17T14:34:49.646-05:002016-10-17T14:34:49.646-05:00This one seems like an interesting companion piece...This one seems like an interesting companion piece to Love with a Proper Stranger (1963), although from your description it sounds like Robert Mulligan's film tackles abortion much more openly.aceblackblog.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08404695143187261837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-6559580827163217502016-10-17T13:57:27.114-05:002016-10-17T13:57:27.114-05:00Yeah, I think we're in agreement here. That makes the whole thing work better. I can't completely blame her for all those winsome roles she played, yes she accepted the parts but she was a contract actress so it was often take what was offered or don't work and AAIP had definitely typed her.

But that problem of the age gap between the character and herself is perhaps more noticeable in retrospect than it was then when audiences were more willing to not be bothered by such things, look at Mary Pickford's career.

Anyway this is her best performance, at least it is of her work that I've seen. She's very low-key and is able to adapt her natural grace to the situation. Her elegance is innate but she never seems to be slumming in the part. It's her movie but the other performers are very good as is the direction. I wouldn't hurry to watch it again but I was glad I got to see it.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.com
