I can remember the first time I saw her--Modern Times--and thinking that she wouldn't look out of place in a modern film at all.

Three of Olivia de Havilland's best performances are in the sorts of films you mention--this one and the two I mentioned above. This is something vulnerable about her; vulnerable, but not pitiable or mawkish. It serves her well here.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-85953776111078865892016-03-29T16:14:25.471-05:002016-03-29T16:14:25.471-05:00This is a lovely film and the lion's share of ...This is a lovely film and the lion's share of the praise should rightly go to the two female stars. Paulette Goddard was a fresh interesting actress who should have had a better career, I know she was a hare's breath away from Scarlett O'Hara and I'm sure that would have made a huge difference to her career but I'm glad she wasn't cast. I've seen her screen tests and while she's nowhere near bad her work seems affected whereas Vivien Leigh even at that early stage was completely at home in Scarlett's skin. I think some of that might have been because she had a more contemporary edge as is evidenced in this, she very convincing as the wised up conwoman.

Olivia de Havilland was great at these sort of vulnerable waif like women and Wilder provided her with chances she rarely had gotten up to this point in her career. It took years for me to catch up with this thanks to TCM but it's ridiculously hard to find considering the cast but then Paramount is the absolute worst at making their catalogue titles available. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-17547961624204908572016-03-28T13:26:19.156-05:002016-03-28T13:26:19.156-05:00These days, when I find one on Dailymotion, I pret...These days, when I find one on Dailymotion, I pretty much just watch it right away.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-57534914323267584772016-03-28T11:54:56.502-05:002016-03-28T11:54:56.502-05:00I can't remember for sure, but I think I'v...I can't remember for sure, but I think I've saved DailyMotion vids with www.ClipConverter.cc You may want to try it.

I liked Hold Back the Dawn when I saw it.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-69453905017749265842016-03-27T09:23:13.496-05:002016-03-27T09:23:13.496-05:00It's saved my butt on a few reviews more than ...It's saved my butt on a few reviews more than once.
