I should probably put That Hamilton Woman on the list, if just for the two stars.

And yeah, unless you're an OCD completist like me, this one is pretty much skippable.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-7328982328311536022015-12-12T14:30:47.030-06:002015-12-12T14:30:47.030-06:00I watched this for much the same reason I watched ...I watched this for much the same reason I watched the original The Letter, to get a glimpse of the leading lady, in this case Corinne Griffith.

Up until I had the chance to catch this on TCM all I knew about her was she had been a big star in silents, retired shortly after sound came in an extremely wealthy woman, was quite a character and had written an affectionate memoir of her childhood with her tippling father and exasperated mother called "Papa's Delicate Condition" which was turned into a film of the same name starring Jackie Gleason and Glynis Johns as her parents. Actually that was my main familiarity since I had seen and loved the picture when I was a kid.

She was certainly lovely and not a terrible actress although in the grand manner which doesn't translate well today. As for the film it suffers as The Letter did from a more accessible version of the story, That Hamilton Woman with Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier. As you mentioned the battle scenes for the time aren't bad but the rest just can't compete against a legendary couple, and two of the best actors the movies ever had, at the peak of both their individual beauty and performing powers.

I'd agree that unless you're interested in its Oscar legacy there's not much here to recommend seeking the film out.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.com
