This wouldn't be nearly as funny with a French or German cast, either. It's the same reason that a film like A Fish Called Wanda is successful--it's that disconnect between what we expect the British to be like and the reality that the stuffiness and uptight sensibilities are really just a sham.

The smartest thing about it, though, is the running time. This would be too much at 105 minutes, but it's just right at 90.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-4262284899916721312015-03-09T12:08:20.538-05:002015-03-09T12:08:20.538-05:00I laughed my ass off at this movie. And even though I had seen Dinklage in other things before (and this was pre-Game of Thrones) they had been pretty much all drama, so I didn't know he could do comedy.

There was an American remake with a primarily all black cast (i.e. Chris Rock as the elder son, Danny Glover as the elderly uncle, etc.) Dinklage reprised his role in it, the only one to do so. The remake is pretty much the same as the original, with the added racial overtones of the drugged boyfriend being white. I liked the original more, though, maybe because Brits are stereotyped as more uptight and seeing them have to deal with all this insanity makes it even funnier.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-79609998296412510042015-03-09T12:02:01.950-05:002015-03-09T12:02:01.950-05:00I loved this film from the first time I saw it. The American remake (which also stars Peter Dinklage) is not as good, despite being the exact same jokes, for the most part. It just... didn't have the same charm. So I think you're right in that it needs the British humor to really work.Nickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08092564511948736386noreply@blogger.com
