I very much enjoy those columns. I've only seen half the movies that were nominated this time around but that doesn't diminish my enjoyment one bit! I love it when he plays bad guys and had I seen this before a lot of his later great films, I'd probably have liked it more than I did. I haven't seen it in a while but I used to have it on VHS and I would watch it every six months or so.

I bet if you watched it again, knowing what to expect, you would like the scenes with the Dead End Kids a lot more. I wouldn't say they were my favorite part of the movie (that would be the Bogart scenes, especially the scene with Marjorie Main) but I always loved the scenes with the street kids because of the way shows life in Hell's Kitchen in the Depression.

Maybe it's just me, though. I love the way that a lot of the 1930s movies have a sort of lackadaisical attitude toward pacing and plot development. Sometimes, you are taken completely by surprise because they shoot off in unexpected directions or they use unfamiliar techniques for transitions. Have you ever seen Three on a Match? I had never heard it was such a great movie but I was very glad I watched it because some of the filmmaking techniques were so looney!
