By the last time I was assigned it (as a junior in college, no less), it had become a comedy.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-89667250075018243862018-06-30T21:21:42.293-05:002018-06-30T21:21:42.293-05:00We still assign this story. Nothing like seeing today's 14 year olds digging a black and white film. They get sucked right in. I could deal with this being another 10 minutes, maybe 15 minutes longer, but I don't know that it could bear being longer than about 75 minutes in this version. Still, when the film is this entertaining, another 10 minutes wouldn't kill it.

I like both McCrea and Wray in this, but as I said above, virtually anyone with a decent physique or a potentially heaving bosom would handle this role decently. Banks makes this movie his and is absolutely the reason to watch it.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-73447211517701461232018-06-29T10:04:14.422-05:002018-06-29T10:04:14.422-05:00This is a terrific film, and wonderfully efficient...This is a terrific film, and wonderfully efficient-these early pre-codes are remarkably spare while punching their story across. This one wouldn't have suffered from a bit longer running time but its not hurt by the brevity either. I wish certain current filmmakers would take the lesson-longer does not necessarily equal better usually its the inverse.

McCrea, a remarkably handsome man in his youth, and Fay Wray are good-and she does look at him like he's a tempting dessert but I agree Banks owns the film.

It has been remade or reworked innumerable times under various titles but rarely better. I do like the 50's reworking "Run for the Sun" with Richard Widmark, Jane Greer and Trevor Howard but that one runs about 40 minutes longer with a lot of new back story added. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.com
