I do agree that Newman makes the role his own, though, which is pretty common with Paul Newman and the roles he takes. It was filmed very near where I grew up, although I wasn't living there at the time. My mother and aunt who did live there went and watched some filming. I never have gotten around to seeing it. I figure I'd recognize a lot of locations.

The book was based where they filmed it because Russo is a professor at a local college, or at least he was at the time.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-17027566267649541592015-06-08T15:26:29.002-05:002015-06-08T15:26:29.002-05:00He's not the most likable guy in Cat on a Hot ...He's not the most likable guy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, which you will be watching because it was Oscar nominated in almost every category you are doing (and they were pretty much deserved.)Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-56823883681137239252015-06-08T14:40:34.893-05:002015-06-08T14:40:34.893-05:00I also must mention the book by Richard Russo, one...I also must mention the book by Richard Russo, one of my favorite novelists. The crusty character of Sully in the book would not make one think of Paul Newman or have Melanie Griffith play Sully's love interest. So I went into the movie questioning the casting of Newman. I came out changing my opinion totally. Newman makes the role his own. I like him even better here than in his Oscar winning role in The Color of Money. Tom Hanks has the same sort of effect, and back in the day, Henry Fonda had the same sort of on-screen persona. It's one of the reasons Fonda playing a bad guy in Once Upon a Time in the West is so effective.

With Newman, I can't really think of a film where I don't like his character, although Hud probably comes the closest. Even when he's a complete reprobate (like, say, The Hustler) he's still the guy we root for.

Benton's film history is amazing considering how unknown the guy is.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-5963693434367175322015-06-08T11:32:01.581-05:002015-06-08T11:32:01.581-05:00I liked this movie and that's mostly due to Pa...I liked this movie and that's mostly due to Paul Newman. I agree with most everything you said about him.

I have to admit that when you started talking about Robert Benton my first reaction was "I don't remember ever hearing of him." I looked up those other movies and was surprised he hasn't made a bigger name for himself as either a director or a writer. He re-teamed with Newman a few years later in Twilight. (No, not the vampires movie.)Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com
