I'm with you on the Hepburn love, but no amount of good acting can overcome what is essentially terrible casting. She's just not right for the role. But you're right--there are problems with the screenplay that even better casting aren't going to overcome.

I get that Lancaster is a showman in this, but he's so over-the-top that he's not believably artificial, but completely artificial, and I have trouble buying him at all. Lancaster doesn't bother me so much, he is over the top and bombastic but a glad handing showboater like Starbuck would be almost constantly on and always pushing, pushing, pushing. Burt's been better elsewhere but his interpretation at least fits his character.

The problem for me is Katharine Hepburn. I'm a fan of hers but she truly is too old and all wrong for Lizzie. What makes it even more egregious is that the part would have fit Eva Marie Saint like a glove at this point in her career and her casting would have made the story work better. Even with Saint in the role though the script still has problems and the decision to shoot on obvious soundstages adds an extra element of artificiality to a movie desperately in need of a dose of reality.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-44629733154711564792016-06-01T10:53:49.143-05:002016-06-01T10:53:49.143-05:00There seemed to be an inability to let go of that ...There seemed to be an inability to let go of that earlier aura. This just isn't anything close to the right role for her and it kills a huge part of the movie. It makes me embarrassed for them. Hepburn generally chose her material than this though. Stanwyck aged best of all I think. marie_dresslerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06334550550983418668noreply@blogger.com
