It created or solidified a lot of the tropes.

As mentioned in the comments above, I think The Poseidon Adventure is a much better film--it would have been a better choice for The Book.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-37277129691942300262021-11-06T07:45:52.084-05:002021-11-06T07:45:52.084-05:00I think I got a bit more out of it than you got. True, it is a template movie, but it is also from a time where this template was not yet worn to pieces.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-5320186578456004682013-09-15T22:31:24.056-05:002013-09-15T22:31:24.056-05:00Too true. I'm not generally a fan of the genre and a lot of that is for the reason you say--I don't care that much about any of the characters. The Poseidon Adventure actually gave me character to care about. I agree that it's a superior film.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-33249013259835370382013-09-15T22:27:01.492-05:002013-09-15T22:27:01.492-05:00The Poseidon Adventure is a much better film, I th...The Poseidon Adventure is a much better film, I think. I would actually call it a pretty good film.

The weird thing about these disaster movies is the long setup of characters no one really cares about. I don't think these movies are ever too successful at creating interesting personalities.

There was a revival of disaster movies in the nineties (meteors, volcanoes and tornadoes) and now they're pretty much an ongoing genre.Ipecachttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15157560182505626755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-12376841242711996182013-09-15T07:52:41.159-05:002013-09-15T07:52:41.159-05:00The Gene Hackman character is--aside from the guy ...The Gene Hackman character is--aside from the guy who falls through the glass ceiling--the most memorable thing about that film, and it's because he's more of a real person. I'd have picked that one to put here if the genre needed representation.

I understand why the listmakers went with Inferno, though. It's a bigger movie and has a much bigger cast and it follows multiple stories instead of just a lone group of survivors. It's a specific genre from a very specific time, and this is one of the most lauded.

It's strange sometimes where our minds go. I couldn't not think of 9/11 when I watched this, although part of that was the proximity of the date I watched this with the anniversary of that event. But seeing people on fire running out of windows didn't remind me of that specifically, but of Denethor running off the top of his city in Return of the King.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-15302684571598522412013-09-15T06:23:37.802-05:002013-09-15T06:23:37.802-05:00God, it's been years since I've seen this ...God, it's been years since I've seen this movie. I think it gave me nightmares as a kid. Just a couple years ago I re-watched "The Poseidon Adventure" for the first time in over two decades. That was interesting. You contend that the characters in "Inferno" are two-dimensional, but I was fascinated by Gene Hackman's character in "Poseidon"—a preacher who, at the beginning of the film, preached something like a "God's blessing is for winners" message, but who, by the end of his time in the film, was berating God even while he was saving lives in accordance with his "winners" ethic. Weird character arc that left me with a lot to think about.Kevin Kimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01328790917314282058noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-61750401742915560042013-09-14T23:20:51.875-05:002013-09-14T23:20:51.875-05:00I hadn't remembered some of the people that we...I hadn't remembered some of the people that were in this movie. I agree with most everything you wrote. I guess the reason it got added was "it's a big 1970s disaster movie".

I do have to say that I saw this for the first time after 9/11 and it was impossible not to connect the two, especially when someone jumped to escape the fire - something the networks thankfully avoided showing as it was happening live, but that they seemed almost obsessed with showing during the look backs for the recent anniversary.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com
