There are plenty of dumb films I love and lowbrow films I watch again and again--Kung Pow: Enter the Fist gets quoted around my house more than just about anything else, except possibly Pootie Tang.

Embrace it. The opinion of anyone who thinks less of you for liking a a lowbrow film isn't worth your time.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-62205215221286331282013-03-01T02:29:01.314-06:002013-03-01T02:29:01.314-06:00I really like this film, but I also feel ashamed f...I really like this film, but I also feel ashamed for doing so as it is so very lowbrow. It might be for Lee Evans (Norm the architect/pizza delivery guy) who is something of an institution over here, but never really translated well into US films (see The Fifth Element, Mousehunt) or it might be because I can't help but sing along to Build Me Up Buttercup over the credits.JayCluitthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16972011198109066985noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-66169460311501413892013-02-28T13:18:49.567-06:002013-02-28T13:18:49.567-06:00@dtm--I think that's the most common reaction ...@dtm--I think that's the most common reaction to this film. In my personal life, my wife is the only other person I know who doesn't love this one.

@Chip--I admit I did laugh audibly when he shocked the dog. That was funny. A lot of this was cruel, though, and I don't always respond to cruelty with laughter. I suppose my fears about Meet the Parents has abated a little, but there's a reason I haven't watched it yet (and that reason's name is Ben Stiller).

@Sio--Yeah, I'm right there with you. Vulgar doesn't impress me for its own sake, and a lot of this seemed to be just vulgarity for the sake of being as vulgar as possible.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-26355963021228422512013-02-28T13:07:02.833-06:002013-02-28T13:07:02.833-06:00I severely dislike this movie for all the reasons ...I severely dislike this movie for all the reasons you so eloquently mentioned. I find no joy from the ridiculously awkward and vulgar situations in it. It also suffered from overhype, as Chip mentioned above.

Although Chip correctly states that Meet the Parents is less vulgar than this film, I found it no less uncomfortable because the awkwardness of the situations was like nails on a chalkboard for me for the entire length of the movie. siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-17462535321116904092013-02-28T10:38:16.669-06:002013-02-28T10:38:16.669-06:00Your paragraph about not finding it funny when stu...Your paragraph about not finding it funny when stupid people are stupid describes me to a T. That's why I haven't liked most Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell movies. (There have been exceptions i.e. 50 First Dates, and Stranger Than Fiction, but in both cases they are playing more normal characters, not idiots.)

The bit with zapping the dog is the part I laughed at the most, too. I saw this a year or so after it came out, so there had been constant hype about it. When I finally saw it my reaction was "that's it?" I chuckled here and there, but it's not a movie that I've ever felt a need to watch again.

For what it's worth, Meet the Parents is more mainstream and less raunchy than this film. Stiller plays a teacher, so his character has some brains. He's just very intimidated by his future father-in-law (Robert De Niro), keeps trying to impress him, and keeps failing spectacularly.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-11334245277674786562013-02-28T09:58:06.746-06:002013-02-28T09:58:06.746-06:00Good review SJ.
