Glenda's role in it is small but it has a terrific cast, Ann Dvorak, Preston Foster, Ruth Donnelly, Frank McHugh, and a fantastic performance by Aline MacMahon. Warner Brothers slipped it out just before the Production Code clamped down and it was withdrawn from view for many years after because of that.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-37728857370871146722018-10-27T11:09:05.475-05:002018-10-27T11:09:05.475-05:00My guess is that TCM runs this a couple of times a...My guess is that TCM runs this a couple of times a year. It won't change your life, but it's a fun way to spend a bit more than an hour.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-3687935091278136662018-10-26T22:48:25.859-05:002018-10-26T22:48:25.859-05:00Haven't seen this one, but I am curious about ...Haven't seen this one, but I am curious about it. Have to see if I can find it. And Curtiz was a machine. 7 movies in one year! I'll keep my eyes out for it. My impression is that she's sort of a female version of Bulldog Drummond, although with a steadier job.

Those weird little series films are a lot of fun when they're done well.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-8773697069816182942018-10-26T20:51:16.004-05:002018-10-26T20:51:16.004-05:00Glenda Farrell's Florence Dempsey is so much T...Glenda Farrell's Florence Dempsey is so much Torchy Blane that this could practically be another entry in her series!

I'd agree that the Vincent Price film is better but this one is still a fast, fun view thanks to the Warner Bros. stock company and Curtiz's expertise behind the camera.

Curtiz is a perfect example of the fact that directors were used like pack mules in the studio system just as much as the performers. Of course since the old studios were set up like factories and productions were always in motion all the elements could be compiled and the director was slotted in just like the actors. It wasn't the elaborate package dealing that it is today.

By the way the Torchy Blane movies are breezy, extremely fast moving (I don't think any of them run over 65 minutes) and undemanding full of those familiar Warners faces and Glenda Farrell (speaking of workhorses between this and the first Torchy film four years later she appeared in about 30 films!) carries them like a champ.

Fun facts- Jane Wyman has a small role in the first film-Smart Blonde-and she took over the role of Torchy in the final film after Farrell left the studio. But it's Lola Lane who only played the role once as well whose name was the inspiration for Lois Lane.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.com
