I think you could argue that pretty successfully.

I'm so blinded by my dislike of the source material that this sort of nuance isn't always easy for me to spot.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-7021532974867615902022-04-11T13:00:10.938-05:002022-04-11T13:00:10.938-05:00I saw this last weekend and came to pretty much th...I saw this last weekend and came to pretty much the same conclusion as you. It's beautifully filmed, and the singing, dancing and performances are great. As for the story, some of the changes to the original material worked for me (Doc replaced by Valentina), and some did not.

For example, in the original, both gangs are terrible, preying on anyone weaker than them, and both gangs are equally responsible for the tragedy. Here, Spielberg expanded the backstory of some of the Sharks, making them more sympathetic, without doing the same to the Jets. I ended up rooting for the Sharks and rather than seeing this as an unavoidable tragedy, ended up blaming the Jets for the whole thing, which I think hurts the story. (Maybe that's just me.)Ipecachttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15157560182505626755noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-55576435742647336042022-03-21T22:54:14.031-05:002022-03-21T22:54:14.031-05:00As bad as that non-existent fourth Indiana Jones m...As bad as that non-existent fourth Indiana Jones movie was, he lost me on War Horse, which was embarrassingly maudlin.

You might like this. If you like West Side Story in its 1961 version, or like the songs, there's a lot here to like. I just don't like the story. I would pay fucking good money to see him do a one-man show where he just sang those songs and do the entire fucking musical himself. thevoid99https://www.blogger.com/profile/03055459287396592446noreply@blogger.com
