There's a little bit of romance (very little) between the two at the start and they marry more or less for him to secure his position at the mine. Eventually, though, something like love blooms and she's one of the main reasons he has his change of heart in the third act.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-65201856022342617232015-12-05T08:46:21.010-06:002015-12-05T08:46:21.010-06:00It's been quite a while since I've seen th...It's been quite a while since I've seen this but I recall that it did have the feeling of being episodic as you mentioned. That middle section was very frustrating because of what Donat's character becomes in it but by the end it was worthwhile. Donat was very good as was the young Richardson.

I may be misremembering but wasn't his marriage to Rosalind Russell presented, at least at first, as one more of practicality rather than passion though over time they come to care deeply for each other? And she gave him sort of a boot up the bum when she's had enough of his high society callousness. I do remember that Roz was good in the film but its one of what she called her "Lady Mary" roles that called for clipped diction and dignity that were her stock in trade before she broke out shortly after this as a comedienne in The Women and His Girl Friday.

I'm going to have to give this a rewatch sometime soon to refresh my memory of it.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-52223344573923387182015-12-04T11:55:06.299-06:002015-12-04T11:55:06.299-06:00MORE SPOILERS!

And yes, I agree that he'll be working to help people regardless of the outcome.

I like that the decision on his license is essentially unimportant in the grander scheme. It's a decision that works. I just rewatched the ending and I can now see you are referring to whether he will have his medical license taken from him. While not shown on the screen, after he gave his stirring speech, and also based on the time the movie was made, I was in no doubt that we were supposed to take from that that he had won the case. And even if he is officially stripped, he'd still be working as a doctor, helping people much like the American TB expert. That was my take on things.
Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-60028915600986881302015-12-03T14:41:23.718-06:002015-12-03T14:41:23.718-06:00I've got that one still coming for me.
I'...I've got that one still coming for me.

I'm curious as to what you thought of the ending. Based on the time this was made, I thought the decision to leave a major plot idea unresolved was pretty daring, and it raised the film in my estimation. I happened to watch this quite near another film about medicine - The Story of Louis Pasteur - and that one has Pasteur fighting against the hidebound idiocy of the French Medical Board while he tries to find vaccines for Anthrax and Rabies.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com
