She was a dancer first and foremost, and if I'm honest, she was probably a dancer second and third as well.

But holy hell could that woman hoof! I could watch her on a loop for 24 hours and not consider my time wasted.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-3967594807091416352018-12-15T19:56:24.567-06:002018-12-15T19:56:24.567-06:00I guess looking through these six nominees I'd...I guess looking through these six nominees I'd come to the same conclusion as you which is rather sad when you take into consideration that even Bette Davis didn't think she should have won and didn't think much of her performance. She knew it was a consolation prize for having lost for Of Human Bondage the previous year. She's not terrible but there are times when she's far too shrill and at sea to be considered the best of the year.

I agree about Miriam Hopkins too. This is surely one of her worst performances which is a pity that it's one that will be viewed more than her more accomplished work in Design for Living, Temple Drake, Trouble in Paradise or many others because of the nomination and the 3 strip Technicolor process.

All four of your top alternates are good ones, though as utterly fantastic as Eleanor Powell was in the dancing arena she wasn't really more than a pleasing actress of no great depth.

I'd add Carole Lombard in Hands Across the Table, Greta Garbo in Anna Karenina, Aline MacMahon in Kind Lady, Alison Skipworth in Hitch Hike Lady and perhaps Madeleine Carroll in The 39 Steps though her role isn't that demanding, but she's certainly better than Hopkins. Garbo would probably be my winner with Stanwyck and MacMahon close runner-ups. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-15389064730592853202018-12-15T14:26:07.159-06:002018-12-15T14:26:07.159-06:00I think I agree with every word that you just wrot...I think I agree with every word that you just wrote.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-37133314629247281652018-12-15T11:26:35.673-06:002018-12-15T11:26:35.673-06:00Miriam Hopkins performance in Becky Sharp ranks hi...Miriam Hopkins performance in Becky Sharp ranks high on my non-existent Worst Performances of All Time List. Haven't seen all the films but Bette is always a safe bet. I almost wish Ginger Rogers had won for her wonderful comedy and dance work with Astaire rather than for Kitty Foyle.marie_dresslerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06334550550983418668noreply@blogger.com
