It's a sad reality that monsters make art sometimes (I didn't know that about Lillian Gish).

This is probably the most fun I've seen Jannings have in a film.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-2387906588816147312021-06-15T10:32:35.686-05:002021-06-15T10:32:35.686-05:00Murnau really was an amazingly gifted stylist. I'm sure had he not been killed in a car accident shortly after sound came in he would have used the new technology to create masterpieces.

Sometimes it's best to either not know or set aside unpleasant knowledge about performers, politicians are a different thing since their actions influence policy, but neither the knowledge that Jannings was a Nazi or Lillian Gish belonged to the American Fascists Society changes the fact that they were master thespians.

In the case of Jannings he's a great illustration of the internationality of silent film. He was an enormous worldwide star until sound came in and because his accent then limited the roles he could play his career was vastly diminished almost overnight. He does appear to be having a very good time in this film digging into his character with glee. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-13222339766659497832021-06-13T10:17:14.980-05:002021-06-13T10:17:14.980-05:00Yeah, it's pretty great. The story is pretty straightforward, but visually, this is everything that a film could be in 1926.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-40295520576057669362021-06-13T01:45:01.750-05:002021-06-13T01:45:01.750-05:00I have seen this film a few years ago as it is an ...I have seen this film a few years ago as it is an amazing achievement on what horror should be.
