Based on the three I've seen, I'd hand the award to Double Indemnity, but I wasn't living through those war years and didn't need this sort of spiritual balm. So while this wouldn't be my choice for the award, I'd be hard-pressed to call it a bad choice overall.

Regardless, I do understand the love for the film. I tend to like musicals more in general when the songs make sense within the narrative, as they do here. I'm still a little shocked at how much I liked it, but that's why I rewatch 'em.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3166297507174717122.post-70102768297707992282013-10-23T11:05:35.368-05:002013-10-23T11:05:35.368-05:00Like you, I liked this film. He's the "cool priest" that can relate to everyone and still teach an Important Lesson without making it seem like preaching. I'm a little surprised this won the Best Picture Oscar, but I suppose with a war on a pleasant reassuring story was just what people needed then.

I've also seen the sequel with Ingrid Bergman as a Mother Superior who is in need of some loosening up coutesy of Father O'Malley. I also liked it.

And if you haven't seen it, you will someday because of Grace Kelly's Oscar - Bing is a bit of a revelation in The Country Girl. He's a washed up alcoholic stage performer that used to be beloved, but whose long suffering wife (Kelly) knows the truth about. Bing still plays himself essentially when he is maintaining the public persona, so seeing him with his wife in the movie really flies in the face of everything we know and like about him.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com
